Ram . Gear Oil InformationGear oil is a fluid-based lubricant used in automobiles to reduce friction in the gearbox, prevent wearing down of the gear's grooves and control the internal temperature by removing the heat generated when operating the gear arrangement. Gearbox An automobile's gearbox is an intricate arrangement of grooved wheels and cylinders. The assembly is responsible for transmission of energy from rotational motion and controlling parameters such as torque, direction and speed, for optimal performance in different conditions. Gear Oil Features Gear oils are designed so that the fluids are able to offer reliability and efficiency across a range of different speeds, temperatures and oil contamination levels. Gear oils should be durable, be efficient in reducing friction and be low-maintenance. Additives Different additives give special properties to gear oils. Rust and oxidation inhibitors are added to rust and oxidation (R and O) preventive gear oils on a mineral base; demulsifiers and fatty oils are added to compounded gear oils for better lubricity. Other oil types, such as extreme pressure (EP) and synthetic, also contain additives. Viscosity Viscosity of gear oils is a physical attribute of the fluid that effects different parameters; low viscosity oils are thinner, support high speeds and low friction, have smoother tooth grooves and give efficient cooling. High viscosity oils, on the other hand, are thicker and are more favorable for lower speeds. Grading According to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), all engine oils and gear oils should be graded. There are two classes of gear oils, based on viscosity, known as monograde and multigrade.
Ram . What Is an Overdrive Transmission? An overdrive transmission, or overdrive, is an automatic or manual transmission equipped with an extra "overdrive" gear. Usually marked O/D on the shifter, the overdrive brings benefits such as reduced wear and tear. Basics A transmission is the automotive part that allows gears to change. The purpose of a transmission is to change the gear ratio: the ratio of input to output revolutions. Typically, the engine (input) has to turn several turns for one turn of the driveshaft (output). Overdrive An overdrive transmission in effect provides an extra "top" gear. The overdrive gear comes into play when the engine turns more slowly than the transmission output shaft turns. Benefits The slower the engine goes, the less gasoline is used. An overdrive therefore gives greater fuel economy. Also, an engine that works less hard does not get as much wear and tear. Options Overdrive gears are available on both automatic and manual transmissions. You can purchase a bolt-on overdrive that you can attach to the end of an existing transmission or simply replace an existing transmission with an overdrive-equipped part. Fun Fact Some motorcycles have overdrives. For example, the mid 1980s-model Honda Magna V65s are equipped with a sixth, overdrive, gear. *A very thin oil called transmission fluid fills the transmission system and generates hydraulic pressure. As the engine speed changes, the pump that pumps the transmission fluid to develop hydraulic pressure also changes speed. The transmission fluid responds to the changes in pressure by flowing through the transmission at different rates. When the car is moving slowly, the pressure is low, and only the low gears respond. In Drive, as the car's speed increases, so does the pressure, and higher gears are brought into play. The hydraulic pressure drives the transmission gears by means of friction bands and plates. These bands and plates do the same thing that the clutch on a manual transmission does — they pull various gears into and out of action. When mechanics tell you that your bands need adjusting, these are the bands they're talking about. They can usually make this adjustment without taking the transmission apart. In two-wheel drive, only the driveshaft connected to the rear wheels gets power from the engine, and the front wheels are disengaged. In four-wheel drive, the engine powers all the wheels. Four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles are different from all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles in that AWD vehicles send power to all four wheels all the time. AWD vehicles usually employ a center differential to split power from the engine to the front and rear wheels. Well, you've survived the ride on the drive train.
